LCPD: Community Fraud Alert On Magazine Sales

News Release: Lake City Police Department

Over the course of the last week, the Lake City Police Department has received several complaints and taken two reports associated with persons in our area selling fraudulent magazine subscriptions.

In one filed report, the victim was an elderly female who had a young white female with pink in her hair come to her door to sell her magazine subscriptions. The female seller was invited inside the residence, and once inside the residence, she asked for a drink and also to use the restroom. While the homeowner was still in the kitchen and distracted, the female suspect went into the victim's purse and stole her cash.

The ongoing investigation discovered the company these door-to-door salespeople are representing is a fake one. The company and organizers of this fraud are recruiting young people and people in need to solicit door-to-door and sell fake magazine subscriptions. While inside the residence, they may also commit thefts of money or property.

We encourage all residents to avoid purchasing any door-to-door product from anyone who is not from the Lake City area or those without verifiable references. Pressured sales and a lack of references or residence in the county should be immediate red flags. Students from area schools who are doing fundraisers are informed in their packets NOT to go door-to-door with their sales.

If you have been a victim of this scam, please contact our agency immediately at (386) 752-4343 and ask to speak with Investigator David Greear of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID).
